Asian Development Outlook

Asian Development Outlook

The Asian Development Outlook, is a series of annual economic reports on the developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank. The ADO provides a comprehensive analysis of macroeconomic and development issues for the DMCs of ADB. The ADO features:
a) an assessment of economic trends and prospects for the world and for the developing economies of Asia and the Pacific;
b) economic profiles, economic management issues, development policy concerns, and economic projections, for the DMCs of ADB;
c) theme chapter covering important issues confronting the region.

Philippine news magazine on-line

The  Philippineo news magazine Newsbreak has just launched its web site.
This should be an interesting source of information from the area.
Amongst the first items is an article showing how fake election returns (ERs) were manufactured and filled up during the Christmas week of 2004. The article uses cell phone pictures as evidence.

Pacific Journalism Review

The Pacific Journalism Review, founded at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1994, is a peer-reviewed journal covering media issues and communication in the South Pacific, Asia-Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. It is now published by the School of Communication Studies, Auckland University of Technology, and has links with the University of the South Pacific.

 

Themes: While one objective is research into Pacific journalism theory and practice, the journal is also expanding its interest into new areas of research and inquiry that reflect the broader impact of contemporary media practice and education.

The latest issue has a very interesting discussion around ethics and accountability with a focus on plagiarism and fabulism. A subject not unfamilar to us here in Scandinavia.

Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC)

As (all too) much of the litterature in Media & Communications studies and journalism education is written from a "developed world" (read anglo saxon) perspective, it should be of interest to all involved in the area to obtain materials from other perspectives.
One place to look is the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC).
As a resource center, AMIC has published a wide range of valuable material on communication issues in Asia gathered from its own conference papers, workshops and research reports.
The Asian Journal of Communication is a joint research publication of the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre, Singapore and the School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.
They also organize workshops and conferences of importance to us all such as;
The Asia Forum on Health Communications, 23 - 24 February, next year in Singapore and "100 Years of Radio: The Journey Ahead"  in Singapore, on the 21 - 23 June, 2006 as part of Broadcast Asia.

Asian Resources for Librarians

Aardvark - Asian Resources for Librarians, has thousands of links to Asian university libraries and over 450 links to Asian databases on the Web (most of them free), conference listings, and much much more. You can get to it at http://www.aardvarknet.info .
Interesting stuff is spread all over the page here, so let's get started. Over on the left you can browse information about Asian databases, from A Sense of History in Singapore to the Yale Divinity Digital Image and Text Library, included here because it has a China Christian college database. There's also a search engine on the browse page. Over on the left there's also a list of over 300 conferences (nicely described, searchable as above) and links to the current issue and back issues of Access, which describes itself as Asia's Newspaper on Electronic Information Products & Services.
From the front page there are several link categories, including annotation, metadata, copyright, and open access. Next to that is a recommended list -- of Asian Digital Libraries, Asian Library Schools, Publishers, Professional Organizations, and more. And finally all the way over on the right is information relevant to Asian library services

Asia quake blog

Several founders and members of the SEA EAT (South East Asian Earthquake And Tsunami) blog & wiki, which gained worldwide attention at the time of the earthquake and tsunami on 26th December, 2005, have remobilised to aid in the relief efforts after the 'Quake of 8th October.
