Social networking to be banned in US schools?

The BBC (and others) report on a possible banning of social networking sites in schools and libraries by a new law.

The Deleting Online Predators Act tries to limit access to the networking sites which have become hugely popular with minors.

The act has already been approved by a large majority in the House of Representatives.

Critics say the act is too broad and could mean a huge number of websites are cut off from users.

The act defines social networking sites as follows:

(i) is offered by a commercial entity;
(ii) permits registered users to create an on-line profile that includes detailed personal information;
(iii) permits registered users to create an on-line journal and share such a journal with other users;
(iv) elicits highly-personalized information from users; and
(v) enables communication among users.

By this definition Myspace, Blogging sites, del.icio.us and even Amazon would be banned.
